Clear Aligners vs Braces: Which One Is Right for You?

By Dr. Mir Hadi Faisal · 5 August 2026

Almost every patient who comes in asking about straightening their teeth has already decided they want aligners. Often they are right. Sometimes they are not, and it is worth understanding why before you commit six figures and eighteen months.

What each one actually is

Braces are brackets bonded to your teeth, connected by a wire that gets changed on a schedule. The wire applies continuous force. You cannot remove them, which is both the drawback and the entire point.

Clear aligners are a sequence of transparent trays, each one shaped slightly differently from the last. You wear each tray for one to two weeks, then move to the next. They come out to eat and to brush.

Where aligners genuinely win

Appearance. This is the real reason most adults choose them, and it is a legitimate reason. If you present in meetings or you are getting married in a year, near-invisible matters.

Hygiene. You take them out to brush and floss normally. With braces, cleaning around brackets is a daily discipline, and the patients who do not keep it up get white decalcification marks that are still there after debonding.

No food restrictions. Nothing is off limits, because nothing is in your mouth while you eat.

Fewer emergencies. No brackets to break, no wires to poke your cheek at 11pm.

Where braces genuinely win

Difficult movements. Significant rotations, extrusion, closing large extraction spaces and substantial bite correction are all more predictable with fixed appliances. Aligners can do more than they used to, but "can attempt" and "will reliably achieve" are different claims.

They work without your cooperation. This is the underrated one. Aligners need 20 to 22 hours of daily wear. Every hour under that stretches your treatment. Patients consistently overestimate how disciplined they will be, and a course that should take twelve months drifts to twenty because the trays spent evenings sitting in a napkin.

Cost. Metal braces are meaningfully cheaper for an equivalent result.

Children and teenagers. Compliance is the deciding factor here, and it is usually the argument against aligners.

The honest decision tree

Ask yourself, in order:

  1. Does my case clinically suit aligners? Only an orthodontist can answer this, after scans and an X-ray. If the answer is no, the rest of the questions are irrelevant.
  2. Will I genuinely wear them 20 hours a day for a year or more? Be honest. If you are not sure, braces will get you a better result.
  3. Is the price difference material to me? If it is, metal braces achieve the same outcome.
  4. How much does visibility matter? If it matters a great deal and the first two answers were yes, aligners are a good choice.

The thing both have in common

Whichever you choose, you need a retainer afterwards, and you need to actually wear it. Teeth drift back. This is not an upsell, it is the physics of the periodontal ligament, and it is the single most common reason people end up in orthodontic treatment twice.

About mail-order aligners

You can order trays online without ever seeing a clinician. Please do not. The trays are not the treatment. The diagnosis is the treatment, and the trays are just how it gets delivered.

Moving teeth without checking the roots, the bone level and the gum health is how patients end up with root resorption, loosened teeth or a bite that no longer meets properly. Those outcomes are expensive and sometimes permanent, and there is nobody in the chair to catch them early.

Getting an answer for your case

An orthodontic assessment takes about 45 minutes and gives you a straight answer on whether aligners will work for you, how long either route takes, and what each costs. If your case suits both, we will tell you that too, and the decision is yours to make on lifestyle and budget rather than on a sales pitch.
