If you have called three clinics in Islamabad and been given three very different numbers for braces, you are not being scammed. You are being quoted for different things. Here is how to read those quotes properly.
Course price, not visit price
The first thing to establish is whether the number covers the full course of treatment or only the day the brackets go on. Braces are not a single procedure. They are a bonding appointment followed by a sequence of adjustment visits, usually monthly, for one to two years.
A quote that sounds surprisingly low is almost always the bonding appointment alone, with every adjustment billed separately for the next two years. Add those up and the cheap quote is frequently the expensive one.
What actually moves the price
How long your case takes. This is the single biggest factor. Simple crowding on otherwise well-positioned teeth might finish in 12 months. A deep bite with rotations and a midline shift can take 24 or more. Every extra month is an extra adjustment appointment.
Who is adjusting the wire. Bonding brackets is the easy part. The sequence of wire changes over the following two years is where orthodontics is actually won or lost, and there is a real difference between a general dentist doing that and a specialist with an MDS in Orthodontics.
Bracket material. Ceramic costs more than metal because the brackets themselves cost more and are more fragile to work with. Clinically they achieve the same result. It is a cosmetic and budget decision, not a clinical one.
Whether a retainer is included. This is where quotes get sneaky. Ask directly.
The four questions to ask before you pay a deposit
- Is this the full course price, or does each adjustment cost extra? Get the answer in writing.
- Who will do my adjustments, and what is their qualification? If the answer is vague, that tells you something.
- Is the retainer included? Teeth relapse without one, so an excluded retainer is not a saving, it is a deferred bill.
- What happens if a bracket breaks? Repairs should be part of the course, not billed each time.
Why cheap braces are usually expensive
The failure mode with underpriced orthodontics is not that the brackets fall off. It is that treatment stalls. Appointments get spread out, wire changes get delayed, and a case that should have taken 14 months takes 30. You pay the same money, over twice as long, and often end up with a compromised result that needs correcting.
The second failure mode is finishing without a retainer. Teeth have memory. Within six to twelve months they drift back toward where they started, and you are looking at a second course of treatment to fix what the first one achieved.
Payment, realistically
Most patients in Islamabad do not pay for orthodontics in one transaction, and no reasonable practice expects them to. Ask about instalments across the treatment period. What matters is that the total is fixed and written down before you start, so the number cannot move halfway through.
Braces or aligners?
If your case suits both, this becomes a lifestyle and budget question. Aligners are close to invisible and come out for meals, but they only work while they are in your mouth, which means 20 to 22 hours a day, every day. Braces work whether or not you remember them.
If your case does not suit both, a specialist will tell you. Severe crowding, significant bite correction and complex rotations still respond more predictably to fixed braces, and any clinic that tells you aligners can fix absolutely anything is selling rather than diagnosing.
Getting a number for your own case
Nobody can quote you accurately from a photograph or a phone call. A proper assessment means photographs, scans and an X-ray, because the roots and the jaw relationship matter as much as what you can see in the mirror.
